Transient Orcas, Whales, Sea Otter, Seals & Sea Lions
September 1, 2017
Today was a stunning day out on the water. It seemed like everywhere we looked whales popped up! This morning we headed west to a place called Beecher Bay and found the T60 Transient Orca matriline. After following this orca family along the shoreline we headed a bit south and ended up with some phenomenal looks at two humpback whales feeding around Race Rocks Ecological Reserve. In the reserve itself we saw both species of sea lions – Steller and California, as well as an abundance of Harbour Seals and Ollie the Sea Otter.
This afternoon we headed the opposite direction and very quickly met up with a different group of Transient Orca. These orca were busy hunting in the strait close to two prime Harbour Seal haulout areas and after a bit we left this family in search of some other whales. There were three separate humpback whales on our way over to Race Rocks Ecological Reserve, and 12 other Transient Orca on the other side. I guess you could say it was a T-party out there!
