Sustainable Tourism Victoria

At Orca Spirit Adventures, we are fortunate to call the beautiful Salish Sea home. We extend our deepest respect and gratitude as we acknowledge the land and waters upon which we have the privilege to work and reside. This territory is recognized as the ancestral and traditional homelands of the Lekwungen peoples, specifically the Esquimalt and Songhees Nations, and the W̱SÁNEĆ Peoples, which include the Pauquachin, Tsartlip, Tsawout, and Tseycum First Nations. We further acknowledge the long-standing and historical relationships that other Indigenous peoples maintain with this land, including the Scia’new (Beecher Bay), T’Sou-ke (Sooke), and Malahat First Nations, recognizing their enduring connection to this region that spans countless generations. We commit to ongoing learning and fostering meaningful relationships with these communities, and we honor their rich heritage and ongoing stewardship of these lands and waters. Every day, we welcome visitors from around the world to experience the thrill of whale watching in Victoria, BC. But with this privilege comes a deep responsibility: to protect the marine wildlife and ecosystems that make these experiences possible.

As a leader in sustainable tourism, we are proud to champion eco-friendly practices that prioritize the health of our oceans and the well-being of the marine wildlife that inhabit them.

A Commitment to Responsible Whale Watching

Victoria is one of the best places on the planet to witness orcas, humpbacks, gray whales, and more in their natural habitat. Yet with increased interest in whale watching, it’s essential that tour operators minimize their impact.

Orca Spirit Adventures follows rigorous Pacific Whale Watch Association (PWWA) guidelines, which set industry-leading standards for safe and sustainable whale watching. These include:

  • Maintaining respectful distances from whales
  • Reducing speed to minimize underwater noise
  • Limiting the number of vessels near whales at one time

By adhering to these practices, we ensure that our tours remain a source of joy and education for guests and a model of respect for marine life.

Flying the Whale Warning Flag

One of the most visible symbols of our conservation efforts is the Whale Warning Flag. When whales are spotted in the area, participating vessels—including ours—raise this brightly colored flag to alert other mariners to the presence of whales nearby.

This initiative promotes safer waterways by encouraging all boaters to slow down, watch carefully, and avoid disturbing these sensitive animals. It’s a simple yet powerful way to foster community-wide awareness and action.

Green Business Certified

Sustainability goes beyond our on-water operations. Orca Spirit Adventures is proud to be a Green Business certified company, and recently being certified as Surfrider Approved Water Friendly Business. This means we’ve taken meaningful steps to reduce our overall environmental footprint, including:

  • Implementing energy-efficient practices in our offices and vessels
  • Installing designated bike rack infrastructure to encourage staff to ride their bicycles to work
  • Supplying locally made products in our gift shop
  • Reducing single-use plastics
  • Offering carbon offset options for guests
  • Partnering with local conservation organizations
  • Using eco-friendly cleaning products on our vessels and in our office space.

Being Green Business certified reflects our holistic approach to sustainability—not just protecting whales, but promoting environmental stewardship across every part of our company.

Educating and Inspiring Our Guests

Our commitment to sustainable tourism extends beyond simple practices; it is deeply rooted in education and awareness. Our crew members, far from being mere guides, are dedicated marine naturalists, each possessing a wealth of knowledge and a genuine enthusiasm for the marine environment. Throughout every tour, they offer comprehensive and insightful commentary, going beyond surface-level observations. They delve into the intricate ecosystems we encounter, the delicate balance of marine life, and the pressing challenges that threaten its stability. By sharing their expertise, they aim to illuminate the often-unseen struggles faced by local wildlife, from habitat degradation and pollution to the impacts of climate change. They also provide practical advice and suggestions, empowering guests to understand how they, as individuals, can contribute to positive change and support conservation efforts. We firmly believe that when travelers are equipped with knowledge and a deeper understanding of the issues at stake, their travel experience becomes more meaningful and transformative. Furthermore, they are more likely to develop a personal connection with the marine environment, fostering a sense of stewardship and responsibility. It is through this collective commitment to education and advocacy that we can truly make a difference, safeguarding the wonders of the ocean for generations to come.
