Written by: Jessie Leo

Hey there! I’m Jessie, the People & Posts person with Orca Spirit Adventures. If you’re wondering where to whale watch in BC or Canada, you’re in for a treat! Canada boasts the longest and most diverse coastline in the world, spanning across the Pacific, Atlantic, and Arctic oceans. Given its extensive coastline, Canada is home (or often, a short-term home) to many of the ocean’s largest residents. Let me guide you through some of the top spots to see whales in Canada, especially around British Columbia.

1. Victoria, BC

Victoria is a prime location for whale watching, with tours departing right from the Inner Harbour and plenty of interesting, biodiverse locations easily accessible via a short boat ride. Orca Spirit Adventures offers both covered vessels and open-air zodiacs, providing options for every comfort level. From May through October, you’re likely to spot orcas, humpbacks, and, if you’re lucky, a shy gray whale or two.

2. Tofino , BC

Located on the west coast of Vancouver Island and approximately four hours away from Victoria, Tofino is renowned for its rugged coastline and rich marine biodiversity. The ideal whale watching season in Tofino is between March and October, with chances to see gray whales during their incredibly long migration along the west coast.

3. Telegraph Cove, BC

This quaint village on the northeast coast of Vancouver Island offers access to the Johnstone Strait, one of the best places to see orcas in the wild. Telegraph Cove is also an ideal location to spot pods of Pacific White-Sided dolphins! They are known for their acrobatic displays and massive pods, and it is always a treat to be able to experience these speedy, beautiful animals. The peak season runs from July to September.

4. Tadoussac, Quebec

Situated at the confluence of the Saguenay and St. Lawrence Rivers, Tadoussac is a hotspot for beluga and minke whale spotting. Moreover, there are thirteen cetacean species you can encounter during a whale watch in Tadoussac! This location offers a distinctive whale watching experience because it allows access to the St. Lawrence River, the year-round habitat of beluga whales.

5. Witless Bay, Newfoundland

Home to the largest population of humpback whales, Witless Bay is a must-visit from May to September. You might also catch glimpses of orcas, minkes, and even blue whales.

British Columbia – Canada’s Best Whale Watching Destination

If you dream of a front-row seat to the ocean’s giants, British Columbia is where you want to be. With whales cruising just off our coast, BC offers some of the best chances in the country to see orcas, humpbacks, and gray whales—often just minutes from shore! From the vibrant waters around Victoria to the wild coastline of Tofino and the orca-filled Johnstone Strait near Telegraph Cove, every outing feels like a bucket-list experience. Add in year-round orca sightings, stunning views, and eco-friendly tours, and it’s no wonder BC is Canada’s whale watching capital.
