Learning Centre

Orca Spirit Adventures is dedicated to helping mature and maturing minds learn about the abundant marine wildlife native to Vancouver Island – orcas, dolphins, porpoises, seals, bald eagles and more, all within their natural habitat.

The Southern Resident Orca Community, made up of whales in the J, K and L pods, roam the waters off southern Vancouver Island from April through November, feeding on salmon runs preparing to spawn. Unlike other communities, this one is made up of a single clan consisting of three pods with several matrilines within each pod. Their unique dorsal fins and saddlepatches are used to identify and track each whale. Read on to learn more about whales and their marine companions.
