Whale & Wildlife Cruise for Conservation!

June 21, 2015

Sunday, June 21st, 10:00 am- Aboard The Pacific Explorer

This morning was a very special trip as Orca Spirit Adventures hosted a whale and wildlife tour for conservation, with all proceeds from the tour going to local non-profit organization, Cetus Research and Conservation Society!

Cetus is a environmental organization which operates out of Alert Bay and Victoria, conducting both land-based and on-water education to boaters, about safe operating practices around whales and other marine wildlife. Their mission is to mitigate boat traffic and educate boaters about the Safe Whale Watching guidelines around the Threatened Northern Resident Orcas and the Critically Endangered Southern Resident Orcas.  With recent major government funding cuts to the program, Cetus needs to find new ways to raise money for their programs that are so crucial to the collaborative effort to protect and preserve these killer whale populations.

Orca Spirit has been continually increasing our involvement and support of organizations and projects that are involved in the protection and conservation of BC’s wildlife and habitats.  We are proud to support the Pacific Salmon Foundation, we offset our carbon use by purchasing acres of forest that will extend the Great Bear Rainforest, and by supporting Cetus Research and Conservation Society right here in Victoria.

Guests on this morning’s tour really got to experience something special!  All three Southern Resident Killer Whale pods were foraging off the west side of San Juan Island!  We started off by spotting Granny (J-2), the oldest known orca in the world at 104 years of age!  We also picked out DoubleStuf, his little bro Cookie, and awesome mom- Oreo!  The best was yet to come with an amazing pass by 29 year old Cappuccino, the oldest male in K-Pod.  He is easily identified by the big, black opening in his saddlepatch and a big notch out of his dorsal fin.

It was an amazing morning, beautiful and sunny, where we not only got to see orcas, we got to learn about them and how so many people are trying to protect them and their habitat.  When we all work together, amazing things happen!  Thank you to all our guests for participating in this wonderful event!
