September 6, 2017 – Transient & Resident Orca Pods
September 6, 2017
Today was the perfect example of the amazing differences between Transient and Resident Orca. This morning we spent the tour with two groups of Transients travelling together – the T10s and T109As. These orca were hunting harbour seals close to the shoreline, and we got some looks at the big male swimming sideways along a rock wall to get to the hiding seals! Not too far away were 2 majestic humpback whales lazily feeding. It’s always amazing to see both species in one tour!
This afternoon we headed to the east to San Juan Island to visit our Southern Resident Killer Whales who decided to make their way back into our range. K pod were foraging on Chinook Salmon and we had the opportunity to drop a hydrophone and listen to the vocalizations as the whales swam by. These whales were active, breaching and tail slapping all around us. Kelp (K-42) came flying out of the water and gave us a full body breach close to the boat! What an incredible day!
