Humpback Whales and Hunting Transient Orcas
August 29, 2018
This morning, we headed out aboard the Orca Mist into Juan de Fuca Strait. Humpback whales have been sighted regularly sighted near Race Rocks and today was no different. We had some wonderful viewing of several humpback whales in some adventurous seas and had another great tour through Race Rocks.
Just as we were leaving the harbour for our afternoon tour, we received a report of orcas near Friday harbour so we headed east to check it out. Our tour took us past the very scenic Speiden Island before we eventually encountered orcas near Flattop Island. It would turn out to be a truly incredible encounter. Shortly after arriving on scene, we noticed a flurry of activity as an orca leaped completely clear of the water! They were in pursuit of harbour porpoise. The power and speed that Bigg’s killer whales display when pursuing the speedy little cetaceans is amazing to witness. We watched awestruck for several minutes as the whales continued their pursuit. Eventually, they slowed down to feed and continued to make their way north. Thrilled with another exhilarating orca encounter, we headed back to the harbour.
