May 14, 2017 – Mother’s Day Humpback Whales

A beautiful sunny Mother’s Day morning had our boat heading west in the Juan de Fuca Strait. After a lovely boat ride up the west side of Vancouver Island, we came across two very active humpback whales. These whales did not look to be fully grown yet, young juveniles, but were putting on quite a show cartwheeling and slapping their pectoral fins against the water. When the whales do this it makes quite a loud cracking sound like a gunshot! They waved their fins goodbye at the mother’s on board as we made our way to Race Rocks Ecological Reserve. Here we were delighted to see both species of sea lions – California and Steller, as well as our male Northern Elephant Seals and Harbour Seals hauled out along the rocky shoreline. A happy Mother’s Day had by all!
