July 26, 2016 – J-Pod Orcas & Humpback Whale
July 26, 2016
This morning, we headed towards San Juan Island with reports of J-pod orcas on the west side of the island. The Pacific Explorer arrived on scene near Open Bay where we watched the J14 matriline traveling slowly north. We witnessed a spectacular spyhop and watched as the whales traveled slowly north.
We received news of a humpback whale further south, so we headed south to investigate. We watched for several minutes and enjoyed the sight of the large baleen whale repeatedly diving and raising it’s massive flukes. To conclude our spectacular trip, we traveled a little further south to watch Blackberry (J26) and his little brother Mako (J39) foraging.
Our afternoon tour began with a great encounter with Blackberry and Mako foraging off Hannah Heights on San Juan Island. At one point Blackberry leapt out of the water in a spectacular cartwheel! Our trip continued with a great encounter with a young orca foraging and chasing salmon. Our afternoon trip concluded with a wildlife tour of the east side of Discovery Island where we saw a mature bald eagle and several hauled out harbour seals.
