March 26, 2016 – Humpback Whale, Seals & Sea Lions
March 26, 2016
Today, we headed out into Juan De Fuca Strait aboard the Pacific Explorer. With calm seas and excellent sighting conditions, passengers and crew were excited about what this trip might bring. The first stop of our trip was Race Rocks Ecological reserve.
Race Rocks was spectacular this afternoon. On our trip through Race Rocks, we saw several harbour seals and three northern elephant seals. As we continued past the scenic lighthouse, we several California sea lions and dozens of Steller sea lions. Perched on the rocks near the Steller sea lions were 5 bald eagles! As we were leaving Race Rocks, we even spotted a sea otter!
We left Race Rocks to travel southwest into Juan de Fuca Strait in search of cetaceans. After a short time, we encountered a humpback whale! We had a thrilling encounter with this magnificent animal before heading back to the harbour. It was a great start to our season!
