L-Pod Orcas – August 26, 2015

August 26, 2015

This morning we ventured over to San Juan Island where we saw some member of L-Pod spread out and foraging over they area. Using the dorsal fin and saddle patch that are unique to every whale we were able to ID 41 year old Marina (L-47) and her youngest, 5 year old, son Mystic (L-115). We then got a good look at an adult male Crewser (L-92) who travels with his Aunt Ballena (L-90).

In the afternoon, we traveled to a similar are near San Juan to see different member of L-Pod. We found a small family that were being very social and playing near the surface. They then proceeded to catch up with some other member of their family by swimming at high speeds and porpoising. Porpoising is a behaviour we see exhibited by the dolphin family (to which killer whales belong) but not the porpoise family.
