J-Pod Orcas – July 7, 2015
July 7, 2015
On our morning whale watching tour we were fortunate to have sightings of the family group known as the J16s, which are prat of J-Pod. Each pod consists of multiple families that are related and often travel together. These individual families are called Matrilines and are led by a Matriarchal female. The J-16s are named after the matriarch whose nickname is “Slick”. Slick travels with her adult son Mike and her adult and adolescent daughters Alki and Echo. In addition we are very pleased to see that Slick and Alki both gave birth to a calf each over the winter! The calves were travelling very close to their mothers’ side. The calves will be given their own nicknames once they make it through their first two years of life.
