Resident & Transient Orcas – June 23, 2015
June 23, 2015
The Salmon Bank, an area along southern San Juan Islands, is a spot where salmon that are caught in currents get pushed up against the island for easy capture by Killer Whales hunting for their favourite food! This is where we encountered L-Pod this morning. salmon, particularly Chinook salmon, are the favourite food of these Resident Killer Whales. It is these salmon that draw the families of whales back to our area every summer.
The marine mammal prey of Bigg’s (Transient) Killer Whales requires these whales to be very quiet, stealthy and very unpredictable in order to find their next meal. This also means that we humans are often surprised by the stealth of the whales. This afternoon we were surprised by a group Bigg’s whales doing some successful hunting off of clover point followed by some celebration breaches to burn off the excess adrenaline.
