J, K and L Pod Orcas – June 20, 2015
June 20, 2015
A gorgeous sunny evening had us journey east towards San Juan Island, home of the Center for Whale Research and the Whale Museum. Famous for the number of sightings of the Southern Resident killer whales, San Juan Island’s fame lived up to its name as we discovered members from all three local pods- J,K and L! The whales were spread out in all directions, and we were surprised and excited to see several breaches, tail slaps and rolling in the water. Some guests got really great shots of the breaches! As the sun set, we watched as the whales foraged for tasty salmon and frolicked in the waves. It is a special time when all three pods are in the area at the same time. It gives them the opportunity to socialize, strengthen bonds and even mate. It gives us the privilege to witness nature’s most extraordinary predators, who are graceful, affectionate, and so amazingly intelligent.
